The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital sees 16,000 patients over the festive period

This year, at least 200 families in Manchester will spend their Christmas away from home as they sit beside their youngest on the hospital wards, in A&E, or in the surgeons theatre. But they will not be alone. Paying a visit to these unwell children is a whole parade of Santa Clauses, professional footballers and magicians giving their time to bring some festive cheer to the patients, families and hard-working staff alike. Filmed in the run up to Christmas, these are heart-warming and heart-wrenching stories of hope and loss at a time of year when spirits are at their brightest.
